Het project: Perpetual Plexus
Perpetual Plexus is mijn langstlopende en meest omvangrijke project. De naam Perpetual Plexus bestaat uit de Latijnse woorden “Perpetual” en “Plexus”. De betekenis van Perpetual is “eeuwigdurend” en de betekenis van Plexus is “netwerk van zenuwen”. Perpetual Plexus is een netwerk van Mixed media sculpturen die onderling met elkaar verbonden zijn.
Deze sculpturen zijn gemaakt met de intentie om permanent op een locatie actief te zijn. De sculpturen zijn een combinatie van meerdere elementen zoals video, licht, geluid, sculpturen, graffiti, sensoren en andere elektronica.
Perpetual Plexus is geïnspireerd op een ondergronds netwerk van schimmelsporen, oftewel een mycelium, het grootste op aarde levende organisme. Een mycelium kan duizenden jaren oud zijn en kilometers in omvang. Ze stuurt signalen van het ene uiteinde naar het andere. Dit beïnvloedt de groei van het mycelium en de symbiose die het aangaat met andere levensvormen, teneinde tot een betere cohesie met de omgeving te komen.

Perpetual Plexus communiceert. Net als in een Mycelium vindt er in Perpetual Plexus communicatie plaats tussen de uiteindes van het netwerk. Sensoren in een sculptuur signaleren de aanwezigheid van de toeschouwer en sturen een puls naar het netwerk. Deze puls veroorzaakt een (licht)effect in de andere sculpturen , waardoor je als toeschouwer de nabijheid van een medemens op een andere locaties voelt.
Perpetual Plexus onthoudt, legt onze reis naar het oneindige vast. Het netwerk en de individuele sculpturen hebben een collectief geheugen. De pulsen van een sculptuur genereren ook veranderingen die in de lichtpatronen worden ingeprent. Hiermee laat elke toeschouwer een herinnering achter in het collectieve geheugen van Perpetual Plexus.
Perpetual Plexus groeit. Net als een mycelium heeft Perpetual Plexus vertakkingen op meerdere niveau's. Elke individuele sculptuur bestaat zelf namelijk ook weer uit vertakkingen, ofwel “Nodes”. Deze nodes zijn net als het grote netwerk zelf, onderling met elkaar verbonden. Zo vertakt het netwerk Perpetual Plexus zich langzaam verder, dijt uit en verkent zo plaatsen waar het kan voortbestaan, in symbiose met de omgeving, de grenzen van de oneindigheid aftastend.
Perpetual Plexus evolueert continue. Elke individuele sculptuur creëert oneindige variaties in lichtpatronen, beelden, geluiden en beweging, continue in verandering, telkens uniek. Vanaf het moment dat de sculptuur actief wordt, verkeerd deze nooit tweemaal in dezelfde staat. Ook al zou deze 100 jaar actief zijn. Perpetual Plexus evolueert eindeloos, telkens op zoek naar een unieke staat van zijn, de grenzen van het oneindige aftastend.
Eerste fase Perpetual Plexus 2016-2024
Rot8ion realiseerde diverse permanente en lange termijn sculpturen die permanent of tijdelijk onderdeel uitmaken van Perpetual Plexus. In 2016 zag Perpetual Plexus voor het eerst het levenslicht in de vorm van de expositie Perpetual Patterns in het Natlab in Eindhoven. een jaar later werd de eerste langdurige sculptuur gerealiseerd in de vorm van Tijdloos op het Stedelijk College in Eindhoven. In 2020 vond de eerste verbinding plaats tussen meerdere locaties met de lancering van Perpetual Process in het Natlab in Eindhoven en Tuumo bij Fit Factory Eersel. In 2021 werd Perpetual Plexus verder uitgebreid met Perpetual People I & II in het Catharina Ziekenhuis in Eindhoven en in het Maxima Medisch Centrum in Veldhoven. In 2024 vond een verdere uitbreiding van het netwerk plaats met de lancering van Strawberry AIscream in het Strabrecht College in Geldrop. Deze sculpturen worden hieronder verder beschreven.
Perpetual Patterns is een mixed media sculptuur. Met Perpetual Patterns verkent Rot8ion de grenzen tussen natuur en technologie met behulp van continu evoluerende patronen. Zowel in de natuur als in technologie evolueren patronen zich in een continu stromend proces. Aan de hand van organische willekeurige patronen die door een machine worden gegenereerd, evoluerende ruimtelijke (8.1 surround) geluidscomposities en variabelen in beeld en geluid die constant van elkaar verschillen. 8 panelen, bestaande uit lasergesneden bladnerf patronen en materialen zoals nostalgische elektronische weerstanden. Een originele ontvanger van een Britse onderzeeër, uitgerust met sonar die de aanwezigheid van mensen detecteert. Componenten van het systeem communiceren met elkaar via MIDI, DMX, serieel, USB, HDMI, DVI, analoog, XLR en sonar.
Perpetual patterns werd vertoond in 2016 in de Expo Hall van Natlab in Eindhoven.
De permanente sculptuur Tijdloos is actief op het Stedelijk College Eindhoven sinds oktober 2017. “Tijdloos” is nooit hetzelfde, ook niet als het 100 jaar actief is. Zo is ook leren tijdloos geworden: je bent nooit uitgeleerd.
Luisteren naar leerlingen
“Tijdloos” luistert. Het is een sculptuur met een netwerk van sensoren die verspreid in de school op diverse plaatsen zijn aangebracht. Die sensoren merken bijvoorbeeld wanneer er leerlingen aan het koken zijn bij Zorg Welzijn, of aan het sleutelen bij Techniek, of een verkoopgesprek houden bij Economie en Ondernemen. Deze sensoren reageren op de activiteiten die in school plaatsvinden en zenden signalen naar de sculptuur. De beelden die op de nodes van de sculptuur worden weergegeven, worden beïnvloed door deze signalen. Hierdoor "luistert" de sculptuur dus naar onze leerlingen.
Tijdloos verbindt. Tijdloos is de eerste sculptuur die is aangesloten op het Perpetual Plexus netwerk en opent hiermee de communicatie met de buitenwereld.
Tuumo is een samenvoeging van de Latijnse woorden “perpetuum” (voor eeuwig) en “movere” (bewegen). Tuumo is een permanente mixed media sculptuur die bestaat uit fysieke ornamenten en video-animatie. De sculptuur is gemaakt door Rot8ion. De sculptuur hangt in Fit Factory Eersel, en is actief sinds mei 2019.
Tuumo verbindt. Verleden met heden met behulp van historische sportfragmenten, en is verbonden met andere sculpturen via het Perpetual Plexus netwerk.
Perpetual Process is een langdurige mixed media installatie op de gevel van Natlab Eindhoven. De installatie was actief van 17 oktober 2019 tot en met 17 januari 2020. De installatie bestond uit een netwerk van semi transparante projectie panelen en geprogrammeerde lichtarmaturen. Natlab heeft een belangrijke bijdrage geleverd aan de ontwikkeling van visuele media. De installatie is geïnspireerd op de manier waarop wij als mens tijd waarnemen en ervaren, en de manier waarop de ontwikkeling van visuele media die waarneming hebben beïnvloed. Perpetual Process is verbonden met andere permanente en langdurige lichtsculpturen en mixed media installaties van Rot8ion middels het Perpetual Plexus netwerk.
Perpetual People I & II waren van Vanaf 2021 t/m 2023 actief in het Catharina Ziekenhuis en Máxima MC.
Toen de Corona pandemie in het voorjaar van 2020 in alle hevigheid losbarstte, en het zorgpersoneel het zwaar had, ontstond het idee om hen letterlijk met lichtpuntjes een hart onder de riem te steken. Dit heeft geresulteerd in de realisatie van twee onderling verbonden lichtsculpturen in juli 2021, genaamd Perpetual People, één in het Catharina Ziekenhuis en één in Máxima MC.
Perpetual People is een symbool van verbondenheid en een dankbetuiging aan het zorgpersoneel voor hun inzet en steun tijdens de Corona Pandemie van 2020-2021. De Corona Pandemie heeft eens te meer duidelijk gemaakt dat wij allen met elkaar verbonden zijn. Rot8ion heeft met de hulp van meer dan 150 particuliere donateurs en ruim 15 organisaties deze lichtsculpturen kunnen realiseren. Beide lichtsculpturen staan ook daadwerkelijk met elkaar in verbinding en beïnvloeden zo elkaars licht- en beeldcomposities.
Middels sensoren hebben ook toeschouwers en voorbijgangers invloed op beide lichtsculpturen. Mede hierdoor bevinden de lichtsculpturen zich nooit tweemaal in dezelfde staat en zijn ze telkens uniek. Perpetual People maakt onderdeel uit van Perpetual Plexus.
Strawberry AIscream is actief sinds 2024 in het Science lokaal op het Strabrecht College in Geldrop. Bij de lichtsculpturen van Rot8ion spelen eindeloosheid en oneindigheid een centrale rol. Ze tasten de grenzen van tijd af door continu in een veranderende staat te verkeren. Ze tasten de grenzen van ruimte af doordat de lichtsculpturen onderling met elkaar verbonden zijn, als een uitdijend mycelium dat zich steeds verder vertakt. Zo is er bijvoorbeeld ook een lichtsculptuur op het Stedelijk College Oude Bossche baan waarmee de lichtsculptuur op het Strabrecht College continu communiceert, waardoor zij elkaars lichtpatronen beïnvloeden.
In het huidige tijdperk vervagen de grenzen tussen menselijke en kunstmatige intelligentie in toenemende mate. Zo communiceren wij steeds vaker met technologie in plaats van met mensen, door middel van chatbots, algoritmes op social media en AI toepassingen als ChatGPT en DALL-E.
De naam van de lichtsculptuur is Strawberry AIScream. De naam is een knipoog naar de naam Strabrecht College en een verwijzing naar de verleidingen van kunstmatige intelligentie als een schreeuwerig kleurrijk ijsje. Dit met als boodschap dat kunstmatige intelligentie nu nog heel veelbelovend lijkt, maar ook een schaduwzijde heeft, waarmee de generatie van onze leerlingen in de toekomst heel verantwoordelijk om zal moeten gaan.
De lichtsculptuur symboliseert de dialoog tussen menselijke en kunstmatige intelligentie. De lichtsculptuur is opgebouwd uit een houten constructie, bestaande uit vensters met verlichting en/of bewegend beeld, variërend in grootte, gelaagdheid en complexiteit. Leerlingen van het Strabrecht College hebben een bijdrage geleverd door het beschilderen van ornamenten in deze vensters. De vensters tonen afbeeldingen die tezamen een uitwisseling vormen van visioenen tussen de mens en kunstmatige intelligentie over hun onderlinge relatie in de toekomst. Ook deze afbeeldingen zijn voor een groot deel gecreëerd door leerlingen van het Strabrecht College, aangevuld door werk van leerlingen van het Stedelijk College. Deze collectie van afbeeldingen zal ieder jaar verder worden uitgebreid met nieuw werk. Samen met de verlichting die in de lichtsculptuur verwerkt is, vormen deze beelden een continu veranderend proces dat zich telkens in een andere unieke staat bevindt.
Elke avond als het daglicht afneemt zullen de strakke vormen van de houten constructie langzaam vervagen door een wolk van licht en visioenen. Als een kunstmatige vorm van intelligentie die, net als een menselijk brein, al dromend alle ervaringen van de dag verwerkt.
Tweede fase Perpetual Plexus 2025 en verder
In de komende periode zal het aantal locaties met door Perpetual Plexus aangestuurde mixed media sculpturen verder toenemen. Sculpturen van Perpetual Plexus zijn te vinden op plaatsen waar mensen verbinding zoeken en op plaatsen waar mensen reflecteren op hun plek in ruimte en tijd. Telkens vanuit een ander perspectief. The project: Perpetual Plexus
Perpetual Plexus is my longest running and most extensive project. The name Perpetual Plexus is composed of the Latin words “Perpetual” and “Plexus”. The meaning of Perpetual is “everlasting” and the meaning of Plexus is “network of nerves”. Perpetual Plexus is a network of Mixed media sculptures that are interconnected.
These sculptures are made with the intention to be permanently active at a location. The sculptures are a combination of multiple elements such as video, light, sound, sculptures, graffiti, sensors and other electronics.
Perpetual Plexus is inspired by an underground network of fungal spores, or a mycelium, the largest living organism on earth. A mycelium can be thousands of years old and kilometers in size. It sends signals from one end to the other. This influences the growth of the mycelium and the symbiosis it enters into with other life forms, in order to achieve a better cohesion with the environment.

Perpetual Plexus communicates. Just like in a Mycelium, Perpetual Plexus communicates between the ends of the network. Sensors in a sculpture signal the presence of the viewer and send a pulse to the network. This pulse causes a (light) effect in the other sculptures, so that as a viewer you feel the proximity of a fellow human being in another location.
Perpetual Plexus remembers, records our journey to the infinite. The network and the individual sculptures have a collective memory. The pulses of a sculpture also generate changes that are imprinted in the light patterns. In this way, every viewer leaves a memory in the collective memory of Perpetual Plexus.
Perpetual Plexus grows. Just like a mycelium, Perpetual Plexus has branches on multiple levels. Each individual sculpture itself consists of branches, or “Nodes”. These nodes are interconnected, just like the large network itself. In this way, the Perpetual Plexus network slowly branches out, expanding and exploring places where it can continue to exist, in symbiosis with its environment, testing the boundaries of infinity.
Perpetual Plexus is continuously evolving. Each individual sculpture creates infinite variations in light patterns, images, sounds and movement, continuously changing, each time unique. From the moment the sculpture becomes active, it is never in the same state twice. Even if it were active for 100 years. Perpetual Plexus evolves endlessly, always searching for a unique state of being, testing the boundaries of infinity.
First phase Perpetual Plexus 2016-2024
Rot8ion created several permanent and long-term sculptures that are permanently or temporarily part of Perpetual Plexus. In 2016, Perpetual Plexus first saw the light of day in the form of the exhibition Perpetual Patterns in the Natlab in Eindhoven. A year later, the first long-term sculpture was realized in the form of Tijdloos at the Stedelijk College in Eindhoven. In 2020, the first connection between multiple locations took place with the launch of Perpetual Process in Natlab Eindhoven and Tuumo at Fit Factory Eersel. In 2021, Perpetual Plexus was further expanded with Perpetual People I & II in the Catharina Hospital in Eindhoven and in the Maxima Medical Center in Veldhoven. In 2024, the network was further expanded with the launch of Strawberry AIscream at the Strabrecht College in Geldrop. These sculptures are described in more detail below.
Perpetual Patterns is a mixed media sculpture. With Perpetual Patterns, Rot8ion explores the boundaries between nature and technology using continuously evolving patterns. In both nature and technology, patterns evolve in a continuously flowing process. Using organic random patterns generated by a machine, evolving spatial (8.1 surround) sound compositions and variables in image and sound that constantly differ from each other. 8 panels, consisting of laser-cut leaf vein patterns and materials such as nostalgic electronic resistors. An original receiver from a British submarine, equipped with sonar that detects the presence of people. Components of the system communicate with each other via MIDI, DMX, serial, USB, HDMI, DVI, analogue, XLR and sonar.
Perpetual patterns was shown in 2016 in the Expo Hall of Natlab in Eindhoven.
The permanent sculpture Tijdloos has been active at the Stedelijk College Eindhoven since October 2017. Tijdloos is never the same, even when it has been active for 100 years. Learning has also become timeless: you never stop learning.
Tijdloos listens. It is a sculpture with a network of sensors that are spread throughout the school at various locations. For example, these sensors notice when students are cooking at Care Welfare, or tinkering at Technology, or having a sales conversation at Economics and Entrepreneurship. These sensors respond to the activities that take place at school and send signals to the sculpture. The images that are displayed on the sculpture’s nodes are influenced by these signals. As a result, the sculpture “listens” to our students.
Tijdloos connects. Tijdloos is the first sculpture that is connected to the Perpetual Plexus network and thus opens up communication with the outside world.
Tuumo is a combination of the Latin words “perpetuum” (forever) and “movere” (to move). Tuumo is a permanent mixed media sculpture consisting of physical ornaments and video animation. The sculpture was made by Rot8ion. The sculpture hangs in Fit Factory Eersel, and has been active since May 2019.
Tuumo connects. Past with present using historical sports fragments, and is connected to other sculptures via the Perpetual Plexus network.
Perpetual Process is a long-term mixed media installation on the facade of Natlab Eindhoven. The installation was active from October 17, 2019 to January 17, 2020. The installation consisted of a network of semi-transparent projection panels and programmed light fixtures. Natlab has made an important contribution to the development of visual media. The installation is inspired by the way we perceive and experience time as humans, and the way the development of visual media has influenced that perception. Perpetual Process is connected to other permanent and long-term light sculptures and mixed media installations by Rot8ion through the Perpetual Plexus network.
Perpetual People I & II were active in the Catharina Hospital and Máxima MC from 2021 to 2023. When the Corona pandemic broke out in full force in the spring of 2020, and the healthcare staff were having a hard time, the idea arose to literally give them a boost with points of light. This resulted in the realization of two interconnected light sculptures in July 2021, called Perpetual People, one in the Catharina Hospital and one in Máxima MC.
Perpetual People is a symbol of solidarity and a token of gratitude to the healthcare staff for their efforts and support during the Corona Pandemic of 2020-2021.
The Corona Pandemic has made it clear once again that we are all connected. Rot8ion was able to realize these light sculptures with the help of more than 150 private donors and over 15 organizations. Both light sculptures are actually connected to each other and thus influence each other's light and image compositions.
By means of sensors, spectators and passers-by also have an influence on both light sculptures. Partly because of this, the light sculptures are never in the same state twice and are always unique. Perpetual People is part of Perpetual Plexus.
Strawberry AIscream has been active since 2024 in the Science classroom at Strabrecht College in Geldrop. Infinity and infinity play a central role in Rot8ion's light sculptures. They explore the boundaries of time by continuously being in a changing state. They explore the boundaries of space because the light sculptures are interconnected, like an expanding mycelium that continues to branch out. For example, there is also a light sculpture at Stedelijk College Oude Bossche baan with which the light sculpture at Strabrecht College continuously communicates, influencing each other's light patterns.
In the current era, the boundaries between human and artificial intelligence are increasingly blurring. For example, we increasingly communicate with technology instead of with people, through chatbots, algorithms on social media and AI applications such as ChatGPT and DALL-E.
The name of the light sculpture is Strawberry AIScream. The name is a nod to the name Strabrecht College and a reference to the temptations of artificial intelligence as a gaudy colorful ice cream. This with the message that artificial intelligence still seems very promising, but also has a dark side, which the generation of our students in the future will have to deal with very responsibly.
The light sculpture symbolizes the dialogue between human and artificial intelligence. The light sculpture is made up of a wooden construction, consisting of windows with lighting and/or moving images, varying in size, layering and complexity. Students from the Strabrecht College have contributed by painting ornaments in these windows. The windows show images that together form an exchange of visions between humans and artificial intelligence about their mutual relationship in the future. These images were also largely created by students from the Strabrecht College, supplemented by work from students from the Stedelijk College. This collection of images will be expanded every year with new work. Together with the lighting that is incorporated in the light sculpture, these images form a continuously changing process that is always in a different unique state.
Every evening as the daylight fades, the sleek shapes of the wooden construction will slowly fade away through a cloud of light and visions. Like an artificial form of intelligence that, just like a human brain, processes all the experiences of the day while dreaming.
Second phase Perpetual Plexus 2025 and beyond
In the coming period, the number of locations with mixed media sculptures driven by Perpetual Plexus will continue to increase. Perpetual Plexus sculptures can be found in places where people seek connection and in places where people reflect on their place in space and time. Each time from a different perspective.
